Alterations to a Grade II listed C18th village house

North Yorkshire, 2023

Design

Burngarth originally dates from the early C18th and is located in a picturesque village setting with the frontage facing directly onto a small beck. The attractive Grade II listed cottage is also known locally for the topiary cockerel which has graced the front garden in varied forms for over 100 years. In accordance with the listed status, modest and considerate alterations have been undertaken to bring improvements to both the building's exterior appearance and interior comfort.

A key aspect of the project was the upgrade of all window glazing throughout the house, including complete replacement of the surviving C19th horizontal sliding sash windows which were rotting through having reached the end of their long lifespan. Each window to be replaced was accurately recorded and exactly reproduced in acetylated softwood for durability. Both new and existing windows were fitted with slim profile conservation grade double glazing which was accepted as a minor change to improve thermal performance; a critical consideration for listed buildings.
